Scattered around the globe are more than 100 small regions of isolated volcanic activity known to geologists as hot spots. 主题句位于段首或者断尾一般好识别，但是以下举例段落主题句（中心句）则是位于段中。

The United States seems to be in love with the idea of going out to eat. Because of this, a real variety of restaurants has come about specializing in all kinds of foods. McDonald’s is the king of a subgroup of restaurants called fast-food restaurants. Chances are, no matter where you live, there is a McDonald’s restaurant near you. There are even McDonald’s in the Soviet Union. Now McDonald’s is trying something new. It is called McDonald’s Express and there is a test site in Peabody, Massachusetts. It is part of a Mobil gas station. This allows you to fill up with gas and fill up on food at the same time. What will they think of next?

段落开始先引出美国外出就餐的饮食文化，然后给出本段的中心句-- 麦当劳是快餐餐饮的王者。最后用具体的细节信息来描述为什么，目的是支撑主题句。

The phenomenon of dreaming has long fascinated philosophers and scientists. The ancients believed that dreams were messages from the gods or portents of one's future. Nineteenth and twentieth century scientists have sought rational explanations--the first such effort to receive wide acceptance was Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory. Freud called dreams “the royal road to the unconscious” by which he meant that dreams lead the way to a realm of mental functioning where our fantasies, emotional conflicts, repressed memories, and infantile impulses find expression. Through condensation, displacement, and symbol formation, troubling and fantastic thoughts evade the vigilant censor that keeps us largely unaware of them in our waking moments.
